Description
The first division (第1師団, Dai-Ichi Shidan) was the first officially constructed division of the Bakufu Rikugun. Formed from the former 4th Dvision of the Imperial Japanese Army, the Shogun personally declared the division "The first division of Ashigaru," with the term "Ashigaru" (足軽; "light of foot") denoting infantry in the classical style. The first division is informally known as "The Mad Dogs" 第一師団は、幕府陸軍で最初に正式に編成された師団である。旧大日本帝国陸軍第四師団を母体に編成され、将軍自ら「足軽第一師団」と布告した。「足軽」とは、古典的な歩兵形態を示す用語である。
