Description
Pennsylvania Railroad was founded in 1846. It was headquartered in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Over the years it acquired, merged or owned part of at least 800 other companies. Its only rival was New York Central which carried a quarter of PRR`s ton miles. In 1968 it merged with its rival NYC and became Penn Central Transportation Company, which filed bankruptcy within 2 years. The viable parts transferred into 1976 Conrail which broke up in 1999 and went to Norfolk Southern and CSX. Norfolk Southern received most of the former PRR; Amtrak received the electric segment east of Harrisburg.
