Description
The 82nd Airborne Division was constituted in the National Army on August 5, 1917, and organized on August 25, 1917, at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Its initial members came from all 48 states, giving rise to its nickname the “All American” Division. During World War II, the division was redesignated on February 13, 1942, and ordered into active service on March 25, 1942. On August 15, 1942, the division was reorganized as the first airborne division in the U.S. Army, adopting parachute and glider operations to provide a highly mobile force capable of rapid strategic deployment and forcible entry behind enemy lines.
