The house was founded by Philippe I, the Duke of Orléans, the younger son of Louis XIII and younger brother of Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Following the July Revolution, they ruled as the Kings of the French under Louis-Philippe I before the revolutions of 1848 saw the toppling of the July Monarchy.
