In 27 BC, the Princeps Civitatis expanded the Cohortes VigiIum to act as a subordinate reserve force to bolster the Praetorian Guard. The VigiIes can be identified by their plain white tunics, having their armor removed to show their subordination to the Praetorian Guard. Additionally, along with their public service, the VigiIes would sometimes act as a private security force for Senators, Magistrates and members of the Equestrian Order. The best of the VigiIes were often assimilated into the Praetorian Guard, on the grounds that they displayed unparalleled devotion and unrivalled combative prowess.
