Description
The Eighth Air Force is a numbered air force of the United States Army Air Forces, formed on January 28, 1942, shortly after America entered World War II. It was created to serve as a powerful strategic bombing force in Europe, tasked with conducting long-range daylight raids against German industrial and military targets. Operating primarily from bases in England, the Eighth Air Force became the largest American air formation in the European Theater and was renowned for its precision bombing campaigns using B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators. Nicknamed “The Mighty Eighth,” it played a decisive role in weakening Germany’s war infrastructure, supporting the Allied advance, and establishing the United States as a dominant air power.
