Description
𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐎𝐒 ───────────── Nesos denotes the island of Rhodes as a unified geographic landmass in the southeastern Aegean, encompassing the three poleis of Ialysos, Kamiros, and Lindos. The island is formed by a sequence of coastal plains, headlands, and interior ridges that shape settlement patterns and routes of movement. Its western coast is exposed to stronger winds and open sea conditions, while the eastern shore provides more sheltered harbors oriented toward Asia Minor and the broader eastern Mediterranean. Each polis developed within this shared terrain according to local access to arable land, water sources, defensible heights, and maritime routes. Despite political separation, the island functioned as a continuous ecological and economic system, connected by overland paths and coastal navigation. In the late 5th century BCE, synoikismos reorganized these established communities into a single political entity centered on Rhodes.
