Description

The Elizabeth County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) was established in 1803, shortly after Elizabeth County’s formal judicial boundaries were drawn. As the county’s oldest continuously operating law enforcement agency, ECSO has long served as the primary authority in unincorporated areas and townships such as Fairwood, Ruby Creek, and Hopewell. Historically, the ECSO played a key role in frontier justice, land disputes, and early anti-smuggling operations along Lake Anderton. During periods of labor unrest in the early 20th century, deputies were frequently deployed to maintain order in rural mining communities and protect county infrastructure. Today, the ECSO provides law enforcement services across the county’s rural regions, operates the Elizabeth County Jail.
