Elizabeth County Volunteer Fire Department #604092908
Description
The Elizabeth County Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1879 in response to a devastating warehouse fire along the Little Horsted waterfront, which destroyed several city blocks and exposed the region’s lack of organized fire protection. Originally composed of local tradesmen and dockworkers, the ECVFD expanded rapidly into the rural townships of Fairwood, Ruby Creek, and Hopewell, where volunteer brigades formed to protect mining camps, farms, and isolated communities vulnerable to wildfires and structural blazes. Throughout the 20th century, the department modernized its equipment and training programs, frequently working alongside the Office of Civil Defense during natural disasters and industrial incidents. Today, the ECVFD operates as a county-wide, volunteer-based emergency response agency, coordinating with municipal departments, state agencies, and the Mayflower National Guard during major events. It remains a cornerstone of public safety.
