Thus begins a century of maritime domination of the famous Spanish galleons over the Atlantic, the Pacific (the Spanish lake), discovered by the Spanish, and the Mediterranean. In 1571, the Ottoman Empire tried to take control of the Mediterranean, but a Christian fleet united and the battle of Lepanto allowed Spain to remain the dominant nation. In 1588, Philip II of Spain decided the invasion of England.
