Description
Janissary Corps The Janissary Corps formed the elite standing infantry of the Sublime Porte, serving as the Sultan’s household troops and the backbone of the Ottoman army for centuries. Established under the authority of the House of Osman, the Janissaries became renowned for their discipline, loyalty, and role in the empire’s greatest campaigns, from the conquest of Constantinople to the defense of Ottoman lands against foreign powers. By 1808, the Ocak remained one of the most powerful institutions within the empire, carrying the legacy of generations of warriors who had served the Sultan and the state. Though challenged by changing warfare and internal reforms, the Janissaries continued to represent the enduring military tradition and authority of the Ottoman realm.
