The Soviet Air Forces were the primary aviation branch of the Soviet Armed Forces, responsible for achieving air superiority, conducting strategic and tactical air operations, and supporting ground and naval forces. Operating throughout the Cold War era, the VVS played a crucial role in interceptor defense, ground attack missions, reconnaissance, and strategic deterrence. Soviet pilots and air crews stood as the first line of offense and defense in the skies of the Union.
