Description
The Absaroka Department of Justice, which includes the Office of the Attorney General, was established in July of 1961, following the enactment of the Judiciary Act, as a state-level legal and law enforcement support agency of the State of Absaroka. In September of 1961, following the enactment of the Public Safety Act, the Absaroka Highway Patrol was established as a state-level law enforcement agency of the State of Absaroka under the Department of Justice. In December of 1964, an amendment to the act restructured the Highway Patrol into an independent agency separate from the Department of Justice. Today, the Absaroka Department of Justice continues to serve as a state-level legal and law enforcement support agency of the State of Absaroka, responsible for prosecuting criminal offenses, supporting statewide law enforcement, and providing legal services to state agencies.
